Well, as of now, the answer to this question is pretty ambiguous. It is both a yes and a no situation.
In 2019, less than 0.5% of all car sales were EVs, however, this might not be a correct indicator of India’s EV preparedness. India sold 69,000 EVs in 2017-2018 and around 143,000 units in 2018-2019. In 2020, India sold about 231,000 EVs. This is a very strong growth rate. Around 97% of all EV sales in India have been two and three-wheelers which again tells you a story.
In this exact present, is India completely prepared for EVs? Probably not. A lot of charging stations, policies, etc. are yet to be implemented. But is transportation in India moving towards a strong electric future? The numbers say a big YES to that.
